Euro Competition - Update 5 (17th June)

So, two groups are now complete and we know four of our quarter-finalist as the Euro 2012 Championships get ready for the knock-out stages.  The last two days have sorted the men from the boys in Poland and Ukraine and our competition has thrown up its fair share of thrills and spills as well.
There was a massive 132 points up for grabs in the last couple of days as not only were the normal group games due for scoring, but we also found out our first group winners and runners-up and our first four quarter-finalists.

Saturday was a day of shocks as the Czech Republic beat co-hosts Poland 1-0 and Greece defeated one of the favourites Russia by the same scoreline.  The Czech result was one which 13 of you got spot on, and you receive 8 points.  A further 56 of you got 3 points.

As for Greece beating Russia, well that’s something only 9 people predicated.  Six of those 9 correctly guessed the 1-0 scoreline so well done to Shauna Kelly, Adam Curran, Jamie Gallagher, Colin McCann, Michael Brennan and Justin Thomas who all receive eight points.

Those results meant that the Czech Republic won the group, something that only 21 of your predicated.  Ten points to those 21.  Only 17 predicated that Greece would finish second, so well do to each of you who received 10 points as well.  Only Kieran ‘aka Fisty’ O’Leary and Shauna Kelly correctly predicated both positions correctly.

The biggest shock on Sunday evening wasn’t just the fact that the Netherlands were dumped out of the tournament, but the fact that they didn’t manage a single point in the group games.  They were, as we said in most of the previous updates, many people’s favourites before the tournament started.

Christina Ronaldo was the man that done the damage for Portugal against the Dutch on Sunday evening, scoring twice in a 2-1 victory.  Only five players managed to correctly forecast the score, so well done to Danny ‘galactico’ Gallagher, Mary Gordon, Leona Curran, Gerard McHugh and Dessie Gibson.  Seven more of you had also opted for a different scoring Portuguese victory.

It was a bit more clearcut in the Germany / Denmark game with just 18 players failing to pick up any points.  159 of our players got 3 points, with a further 28 getting the maximum 8 points for going for the Germans to win two one.

In all, 108 had Germany winning the group and just 26 having Portugal finishing second.  So, 10 points to all 108 who had the Germans finishing top and 10 points to the 26 who put their faith in Portugal finishing second.

After all that, Shauna Kelly is the only person to get all four group winners / runners up correct.

As for qualifying for the Quarter-Finals, 191 players opted for Germany, 93 backed the Czech Republic, 35 put their faith in Portugal and 20 for surprise packages Greece.  So, 15 points are awarded to each team you correctly predicated from that lot to make the quarter-finals, regardless of where they finished in their group.

Only one player, Shauna Kelly (that girls name just keeps popping up today), has correctly predicated all four quarter final teams – she picked up a massive 100 points alone just for that and has jumped from 78th in our league table to top spot.  Well done Shauna, that’s some predicting and would have been worth quite a few euros down the bookies!!!!

Only seventeen players have three of the four teams in the quarter-finals so far, 101 have two teams while 81 have just the one side.  But, spare a thought for poor Michael Scully who has none of the four quarter-finalists so far.  Michael will be hoping for better luck from Groups C and D in the next couple of days.

Have you taken all that in.  Good.

What has it done for our league table.  As mentioned earlier, Shauna Kelly is the new leader and has a nice 15 points gap over Leona Curran in second place.  Only Patsy Lafferty in 10th and Alun McNulty in 8th remain in the top ten since our last update two days ago.  Other than the great performance of Shauna in top spot, the other biggest mover was Bartley Ramsay who has jumped from 103rd to a share of 10th.

Going the other way, Michael Neeson – who had never been out of the top ten prior to tonight – drops 100 places from 8th place to 108th.  Michael Scully is now at the foot of the table with just 23 points, but Trevor Lynch is only four points clear of him on 27 points.

There is another 132 points up for grabs over the next two games and I will update everyone again on Tuesday evening after the final two games in Group D.
