After an exciting opening couple of days to the tournament, the ‘Boys in Green’ finally got their championship underway on Sunday evening and it’s a game that most of us will want to forget. Such was the confidence in everyone for the team to get a result that only 12 players predicted a Croatian victory, although none got the correct 3-1 scoreline. However, 3 points to each of those dozen players.
You faired little better in the earlier Group C game which finished in a 1-1 draw between Spain and Italy earlier on Sunday. Only 31 players plumped for the draw, but 20 of these had correctly forecast a 1-1 result and picked up eight points each – the other 11 get 3 points each as a result of going for a different scoring draw.
Our friends from across the pond got their tournament underway on Monday afternoon. The game between England and France featured loads of players from the English Premier League and both goals scored in the game came from players with the newly crowned Champions, Manchester City. 84 players correctly predicated that the game would finish in a draw, with a massive 56 going for a 1-1 result meaning 8 points for all 56 of you.
The final two teams to play their first game in the Championship was joint-host nation Ukraine and Sweden. After a slow start to this game, it was the local hero Andriy Shevchenko who grabbed two goals to help the home side to a 2-1 victory – a result that 27 players predicated. A further 25 of you had also opted for a Ukraine win.
All teams have now got their first games out of the way and next up is the Group A games between Greece / Czech Republic and Poland / Russia on Tuesday before Wednesday sees Denmark face Portugal and Netherlands taking on Germany in Group B on Wednesday. I will issue a further update after these games on Wednesday night.
So, what does that do to our league table. Colman Byrne, Mark Neeson and Manus Dunnion move into joint top spot from joint seventh with 30 points (from a possible 64). Sean Ryan moves up from 65th to joint fourth while Paul Kelly moved up a massive 114 places to a share for 11th place. Special mentions as well to Damien McDermott, Eimear McCafferty and Conor Carlin who moved well up the table from the lower regions.
Finally, as we sign off from our second update, we have to pay a special mention to four geniuses – Alan Reid, Mark Cannon, Richard Gibson and Shauna Kelly – all have managed to obtain ZERO points so far.
