We had a great response to our Euro 2012 Prediction Competition with a total of 200 entries. Therefore, there is €1,000 in the prize fund. 1st Prize will receive €750, 2nd will get €150 and there will be €100 for the person finishing third. It was a great opening two days to the tournament with plenty of goals, drama, excitment and shocks.
So, half the teams in the 2012 European Championships have now played their opening game of the tournament. Poland and Greece played out a 1-1 draw in the opening game – 45 of our 200 players correctly predicated the 1-1 draw and received 8 points, while a further dozen got 3 points for predicating a draw with different scorelines.
The was followed up with Russia dishing out a 4-1 hammering to the Czech Republic, a scoreline that none of our players, unsurprisingly, failed to predict. However, 141 of you receive 3 points for predicting a Russian victory.
The biggest surprise in the opening two days saw Holland – one of the favourites – lose 1-0 to the unfaniced Denmark. Only one person managed to pick up any points from this game, so well done to Michael Brennan who correctly plumped for a 1-0 win for the Danes.
The second game on Saturday saw Germany record a 1-0 victory over Portugal. Only 66 players failed to predict a German victory, with 17 of the 134 who backed the Germans going for the correct 1-0 scoreline.
Therefore, after four games we have a six-way tie at the top of the table on 19 points (from a possible 32). 24 players are a further five points behind on 14 points. Spare a thought for the 18 players who have yet to score a single point. The full scoreboard is listed below.
So, who are the favourites to win the tournament. A massive 82 have opted for Germany to win the tournament, while over a quarter of our players (58) have gone for the Netherlands to be crowned Champions in the final on 1st July. Should Holland lose their next game on Wednesday, their tournament will be over.
Only 45 have gone for World Champions Spain to make it three tournaments in a row in winning a major championship. Five players have gone for our own Boys in Green to win a first ever major Championship while three each have gone for Portugal and Italy. No-one has backed our near neighbours from England to be celebrating.
The fun and games has begun. I’ll issue a further update in a couple of days after which time Ireland will have played their first game in the tournament.
