20 of the 24 teams that came to Poland and the Ukraine over a fortnight ago are now out of the tournament and either at home, or heading home. And for quite a few of our players the chance of claiming any of the three cash prizes on offer is over as well as we reach the business end of the tournament.
Spain, as 183 of your predicated, reached the semi-finals without really getting out of second gear with a comfortable 2-0 win over the French last night.
This evening’s game gave us a hat-trick of things that haven’s happened at these championships – namely a 0-0 draw, extra-time and a penalty shoot out. Having been outplayed for the entire two hours, England deserved to lose out in the shoot-out to Super Mario and his Italian Brothers (do you see what I did there?). However, only 25 people had backed Italy to make it to the last four.
Out of the last two quarter-finals, only 20 players have managed to guess that both Italy and Spain would get there. 168 of you got one of the two, while an unlucky 13 managed to predict none of the two.
So, how is it looking for our players now. Well, 23 players have one of the four semi-finalist, 142 have two of the last four, a decent number of 34 have three of the four, while only two players have all four semi-finalists, so well done to both Aidan McGrenra and Bartley Ramsay who both have an excellent chance of picking up many more points over the next three games.
There has been no change in the personnel in our top ten, but there has been movement within that select group. Aidan McGrenra has jumped from 4th to 1st and has a tiny three points over previous incumbents Shauna Kelly and Donal Murphy – Italy winning this evening done them no favours. Patsy Lafferty and Bartley Ramsay both move up two places each.
As I said at the very outside, most of the teams that entered the tournament have gone home. As there is only 110 points up for grabs from the last three games, it means that mathematically only the top 82 on our leaderboard can claim any of the cash prizes that will be dished out after next Sunday’s final. For the rest, it’s only pride and a finish as high as possible that is left to play for.
There will be two more updates between now and the end of the tournament. The next update will be after both semi-finals are played (Thursday night) and then after the final next Sunday.
